In a letter to his father dated February 7th, Corporal James M. Stuart of the Union Army writes to his father back home. He consoles his father and makes report of his brother's condition. He speaks mainly of boring camp life, but mentions large numbers of confederate soldiers deserting to his commanding officer.

This collection consists of a hand-written obituary notice for Brigadier General James P. Brownlow, copied from the New York Herald in 1879.

Collection contains James Perkins' research material for his book The Cass Mastern Material, which explores the variations in Robert Penn Warren's work. Correspondence, an interview, electronic copies of his book, and paper copies of Warren's plays are included.

In this letter written from Waverly, Tenn., and dated February 16, 1864, James E. Pritchard of the 8th Iowa Cavalry writes to his brother John. He comments that the "Rebels will never regain a hold on East Tennessee," noting that in Waverly, 300 Confederates surrendered and took the oath of allegiance.

This collection consists of a letter written from a camp in the field near Chattanooga from James R. Bell to a Miss Ella Bell. He desires to perpetuate "a friendship I esteem as almost sacred" with her and asks of news of her and her brother George.

James R. Delaunay collected these autographs from fellow prisoners of war while he was incarcerated in Johnson's Island, Ohio from December of 1864 to June of 1865. This item is a transcription of the original booklet, which was then in the possession of the Collierville Herald.

This collection contains a letter soldier James Smith wrote to his family on March 3, 1865 in Patterson, Missouri. Smith writes his father and family about his regiment's movements and his desire to come home.

This letter, written by James Strawbridge from a floating hospital in Nashville, Tenn., on June 10, 1863, discusses a dispatch from Jefferson Davis that was captured by General Blair's division and a battle between the Rebels and a black regiment.

This collection consists of a Civil War letter written by Captain James W. Field on November 3, 1863, at Cumberland Gap. Field's letter pertained to the Cumberland Gap and his duties there as a soldier.

The James Williams Letter, dated October 22, 1866, was written by Williams, a Confederate diplomat, during his exile in Gratz, Styria. He discusses his thoughts and feelings regarding the fall of the Confederacy and the condition of the United States in 1866.

Jas. F. Fletcher Jr. wrote this letter to Major E. S. Burford in Dalton, Georgia on April 26, 1864. It refers to a number of affidavits (not included) documenting a black mare that was stolen from his property by Federal soldiers.

This collection consists of one letter written by Jefferson Davis in his home in Beauvoir, Mississippi. In the letter, he talks about an award he received from the Forbes Bivouac, a Confederate veterans group.

Jefferson Justice's handwritten report in September 1863 of items lost in transportation from Crab Orchard, Kentucky to Knoxville, Tennessee after the 1863 Siege of Knoxville; items mentioned include bread, coffee, and sugar.

In this letter, Jennie McKay discusses her life on the Confederate homefront in Missouri. She speaks of her home being burned, family members currently serving with the Confederate Army, what she considers the inflated prices of various goods, and the death of her older sister Christiana.

Jeremiah S. White's account of his experience in the Civil War as a special courier under General Nathan Bedford Forrest of the Confederate Army.

This collection consists of a letter from Jethro Hill, dated February 3, 1864, sent from Lenoir's Station, Tennessee, to Jodie. Hill describes a brief battle and his good living conditions. He also asks for news of the family and wonders why Jodie hasn't responded to his previous letters.

This collection contains a letter from Job Barnard to Flora Putnam, written from La Vergne, Tennessee on May 30, 1864. In it, he discusses his work on monthly reports to the War Department and singing for a sick Sergt. Henseley of Co H. Barnard also describes meeting local families and conversing with one woman about southern girls versus Yankee girls. He also talks about ladies who seem to like him or think he likes them.

This collection consists of a transcription of an 1864 Civil War diary, written by John A. Curran of the 32nd Iowa Regiment, Co. B. It covers the time period from July 11, 1864 to February 11, 1865.

This June 23, 1880, document by John Bell Brownlow, is a copy penned by Brownlow himself of an affidavit filed at the pension office in Washington, D.C., concerning his disability claim for hemorrhoids resulting from events during and after the Civil War.
