Walter L. Morris Collection

Abstract

The Walter L. Morris Papers document the Knoxville native’s more than 50-year career in the movie theater business, managing movie theaters for Paramount (Publix), Warner Bros., and 20th Century Fox (Fox West Coast) and running his own theaters in Knoxville and Oak Ridge, Tenn. The collection includes biographical papers, theater promotional and operational papers, movie producer papers and movie reels from 1910-1999, with the bulk of the material covering 1922-1983.

Abstract This broadside, apparently a newspaper supplement, explains Fitzgerald's opposition to an upcoming bill that would increase taxes in Tennessee. He blames fiscal policies of previous administrations, particularly in regard to railroad bonds, as well as improper or fraudulent behavior of several officials. This collection consists of an address book, correspondence, enlistment and honorable discharge records, photographs, press clippings, and a promotion list from Walter M. Higgs' service in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. Higgs served in the Pacific Theater as part of the 17th Bomber Squadron 27th Bombardment Group and was a POW in Japan.

The Wartburg (Tenn.) Collection, 1864-1925 (bulk 1864-1896), contains numerous letters to residents of or regarding life in Wartburg, Tenn. (Morgan County). All of these documents except for the single letter from 1925 are written in German. Some of the topics covered include Civil War-era Chattanooga (letter dated March 29, 1864), the Southern Express Company of Knoxville (November 6, 1868), and alcohol production and prices (many of the letters from the 1880s and 1890s).
