Smoky Mountains Hiking Club Records

Abstract

This collection consists primarily of bulletins, photographs, song sheets, member information, and other materials documenting the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. Also included are a few issues of the Georgia Mountaineer, three guidebooks to various areas of the Smoky Mountains, and materials describing the building of a transmountain road in the 1960s and the passage of the 1964 Wilderness Bill.

Society of Friends Letter

Abstract

This broadside reprints the letter that the Quakers in London wrote to King George I, followed by his brief reply. In their letter, they praised his justice and clemency, assured him of their loyalty and obedience, and expressed their sorrow over the ungrateful men of the recent rebellion. King George responded with a single sentence of appreciation.

Society of the Army of the Tennessee Ribbons

Overview

Collection contains two commemorative ribbons from the seventeenth and nineteenth reunions of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee. The ribbons are printed with gold text that states the event and dates. The seventeenth reunion took place in Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota, on August 13 and 14, 1884. The nineteenth reunion was held in Rock Island, Illinois, on September 15 and 16, 1886.

Soldier Alexander B. Richards Civil War Letter

Personal correspondence between Union soldier Alexander B. Richards and his sister, Emaline Butcher of Murphysboro, Illinois, dated February 14, 1864. He details the Battle of Knoxville and Fort Sanders (Tenn.) which took place on November 29, 1863 and his trek from Chattanooga with H Co. Illinois 27th Infantry.

Soldier Robert P. Rudder Letter

This collection consists of one letter sent by Sergeant Robert P. Rudder of the 6th Regiment of the East Tennessee Volunteer Infantry to his sister during the Civil War in 1864. The correspondence details his experience after the Battle of Atlanta, fought July 22, 1864, and also contains personal details and reflections on his time in service.

Soldier's Prayer Book

This collection contains the Soldier's Prayer Book, published in Philadelphia 1861, of William F. Hill. There are also two business cards, one belonged to Hill of Apponaug, Rhode Island, and the other to Lt. Gideon Spencer of the First Regiment, Rhode Island Light Artillery.

Solomon Moor Receipt

Abstract

This collection is comprised of a single receipt signed by Solomon Moor and John Kelley to David Henley, War Department agent. The receipt was written on March 26, 1797, in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was given as an advance of two-hundred dollars for the transportation of Creek, Chickasaw, and Cherokee peoples from Philadelphia to Knoxville.

Solomon Porter Petition

Abstract This petition to the County Court of Shelby County, Tennessee was prepared by an unknown lawyer on behalf of a free man of color named Solomon Porter. Porter, a native of Tennessee, assures the court that he desires to seek employment in Shelby County in order to adequately support his family. This collection includes “Songs and Tales from Fairyland” by Alexander Abbey Piper. The verses and songs are dated June 1927–June 1931. The subjects of the verses and songs include love, spirituality, and stories for children. The book was a present to John C. Hodges from Piper and includes a handwritten inscription by Piper in the front of the book dated June 1931.

Southeast University-China Commemorative Plate

This item is a plate given to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville by Southeast University-China. Southeast University participates in the Confucius Institute, a division of UTK's international program for exchange students between Knoxville, USA and Nanjing, China. The plate is a fragile ceramic with an image of one of Southeast University's halls. It comes complete with a folding wooden stand.
