Department of the Interior Bounty Land Certificate for William A. Foote

This collection consists of a bounty land certificate dated January 10, 1856 issued to William A. Foote by the Office of the Commissioner of Pensions for service in Captain Smith's company, Virginia Militia, in the War of 1812. The certificate grants 160 acres of land.

Derby Family Papers

Abstract

This collection consists of a series of letters written between Colonel George McClellan Derby and his mother, Mary (Coons) Derby. At the time, Mary Derby was living in Chattanooga, Tennessee and George Derby was serving with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in such places as New Orleans, Louisiana; Smithville, Kentucky; and Louisville, Kentucky. The letters contain family updates and questions about George Derby's life and activities.

This small leaflet, entitled "Message of the Governor" presents the alarming conditions of the state penitentiary and requests the Tennessee Senate and House of Representatives take some definite and prompt action before they adjourn for the holidays. The alarming conditions were the result of overcrowding and immense indebtedness. It is signed in type by D.W.C. Senter.

Diary of a Disbursing Agent

A handwritten diary, written between 1834 and 1838, by a Disbursing Agent for the removal of the Cherokee Indians from the southeastern United States. The diary follows the author's travels through the southeast in the time leading up to the removal and documents their work and interactions with the Cherokee people.
