T. J. Crawford Letter

Abstract

In this letter to his brother Joe, Thomas J. Crawford mentions that he is tired of fighting and reports that three of the men from his company that are being kept prisoner in Elmira, New York have died. He also responds to his brother's letters about girls wearing him out.

T. K. Gay Letter

Abstract

This collection consists of one handwritten letter, written in 1864 in Knoxville, Tennessee, by T. K. Gay of the Signal Corps to his brother Cal in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. It reports that Knoxville is currently tranquil but expresses concern that John Morgan is preparing to attack. Gay hypothesizes that if Morgan were to attack he would meet strong resistance, as more troops were expected for the defense of the city. Gay also opines that the war will end soon.

T. P. Bateman Letter

Abstract

This letter from Lieutenant Colonel T. P. Bateman of Centerville, Tennessee was sent to D. Cambell and E. Cook on April 6, 1861 concerning the appointment of his fellow townsman Colonel Nunelly as postmaster of the town of Centreville, Tenn. The appointment is dependent on the removal of Secesh sympathizer and current postmaster Major Pleasant Hornbeak.

Colletion consists of an original document confirming the sale of land (four million acres, much of which already had Cherokee and Creek Indian inhabitants) from the state of Georgia to the Tennessee Company, owned by Zachariah Cox and Matthias Maber. The item was signed on January 24, 1795. It specifies the amount of land and its boundaries, marking beginning and ending areas with waterways like Bear Creek and the Tennessee River.

Tennessee Railroad Depot Photographs

Abstract

This collection consists of 46 photographs of train depots across Tennessee. With one exception, each image is identified by place and time, and a few have the photographer name on the back. The photograph of Spring City, taken by P. M. Darnell on June 6, 1964, also includes a note reading "Old-fashioned train robbery held - also, all train passengers fed free meal." Other identified photographers include Tom Sink, Warren Calloway, James L. Paty, and Fran Goodyear.

Tennessee Senate Bill for Sinking Fund

Abstract

This bill, no. 76, was introduced by Landon C. Haynes in order to provide for a Sinking Fund to be used to reduce the state's debt. It has three sections, the first establishing the sinking fund and its funding. The second section explains that the funds will be paid to the Bank of Tennessee for the purchase of state bonds. The third calls for the Bank to provide a report to each session of the General Assembly.
