This collection consists of one hand-written copy by John Bell Brownlow of an affidavit filed at the pension office in Washington, D.C., dated June 23, 1880. The document concerns his disability claim of hemorrhoids and gives a detailed list of Brownlow's actions during the Civil War, the suffering of his disability following the war, and of the doctors and treatments he received.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This collection contains one letter, written in 1862 at Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., by William H. Blake, 3rd Iowa Volunteers, Company C, to his brother. The letter discusses events leading to the Battle of Shiloh, and the large number of troops gathered and the beautiful sight to see so many men all together. Blake also describes trees cut down by cannon balls and the sight of a dead soldier.

In the letter, Weston writes that he has been left in Cleveland to take charge of baggage while the rest of his regiment is in Georgia with Sherman's army. This collection consists of one letter from John Bell, then Secretary of War, to William Brownlow, publisher of The Whig newspaper. Written on August 30, 1844, Bell discusses in the letter his support for Henry Clay in 1839 after Brownlow wrote in a book that the only man who had the holding in 1839 to come out openly for Clay was future Governor James C. Jones.
