B. S. Williams Collection of 19th Century Knox County Deeds

Abstract

This collection consists of three deeds created in Knox County, Tennessee, between 1823 and 1836. The first, dated September 2, 1836, records a sale of seven enslaved people between Robert Campbell and Andrew McMillan. The second, dated September 7, 1823, is a deed for land in Knox County between John Rutherford and Richard Monds. The third, dated January 6, 1825, is a deed for land in Knox County between James Blackwell and his wife Elizabeth and John R. Nelson.

B. W. Martin Letter

Abstract

This collection consists of a letter from B. W. Martin of Harriman, Tennessee, to an unnamed woman, dated July 1, 1897. The letter describes how to take an eye test and lists prices for eyeglasses and watch repair.

B. W. Morse Letter

Abstract

Sergeant B. W. Morse wrote this 13 page letter to his father from St. Julien, France on November 24, 1918. He assures his father that he is still alive and kicking and anxious to be in the U.S.A. Because Morse was writing weeks after the Armistice, he is able to divulge small amounts of information about his travels and service. He mentions submarine movements and depth bombs, but concentrates on his desire to return home and spend Christmas with his family.

Bank Account Book

Abstract

This account book contains lists of transactions, many for currency or settlement, with a variety of customers. Among the individuals and businesses represented are Cowan McClung and Company, S.V. McCorkle, Stamps and Company, D.P. Rowe and Company, and Knoxville Iron Company. A loose piece of paper bears the letterhead of The Hanover National Bank of the City of New York.

Barbara Goddard's Memoirs of Lewis Frelan Goddard

Abstract This collection consists of a 29-page pamphlet by Captain John K. Shellenberger entitled "The Battle of Franklin." Its text constitutes a published version of a speech that Shellenberger gave before a meeting of the Minnesota Commandery of the Loyal Legion of the U. S. on December 9, 1902. In this work, Shellenberger describes tactical aspects of the Battle of Franklin, the condition of the Union soldiers before the battle, and the plight of the men wounded during the battle. The Baxter J. Hodge Papers, 1888-1897, document the early part of Hodge’s career as an architect in Nashville, Tennessee. During these years, Hodge designed several prominent Nashville buildings along with a number of private residences. This collection contains contractor’s bids for various projects, formal contracts between Hodge, his clients, and selected contractors, drawings of various projects, and blueprints.
