Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

In this letter, Captain William R. Story of the 1st U.S. Colored Artillery (heavy) writes to John J. King on behalf of a soldier under his command named Tecumsey whose wife, formerly one of King's enslaved people, is still living in King's home. The soldier would like her to be able to remain in the house, and Story assures King that the man earns a reasonable wage and will be good for any small amount of a years rent.

In this indenture document dated May 19, 1784, Waightstile (usually spelled Waightstill) Avery, John Blair McMahon, and John Thomas of North Carolina indebt themselves jointly to George Barkley for the sum of 44 pounds. Additionally, Avery alone indebts himself to Barkley for 22 pounds.

Davis from Leta Oscar Colditz of Allardt, TN, on February 20, 1950. Accompanied with Colditz’s letter are three weaving patterns that are handwritten. Raymond Latarjet Letter to Rufus Day, 1977, 1984

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

The documents in this collection include and relate to a letter written by the French radiobiologist Raymond Latarjet to his friend Rufus Day in 1977. The letter tells the story of the invention of the double quartz prism monochromator by Jean Saidman before World War II, as well as the story of its loss and subsequent rediscovery by Latarjet. An English translation accompanies the letter as do two photographs of Latarjet and related letters.

This collection consists of a document concerning a land speculation indenture agreement involving Andrew Jackson, Pierce Butler, and David Allison. While it initially seems that Jackson and Pierce owe Allison money, the latter half of the document seems to address the stipulations of Butler's failure to pay this debt as well as further settlements between Butler and Allison.

This collection contains one detailed bill from 1797 for James Collingsworth for "smith work done by him for the Cherokee" as he was ordered to do by General Robertson. A note is added at the end on March 7, 1798 that Collingsworth's charges for the Cherokee are "not at higher prices than what he charges the white people of the neighborhood."
