Abstract

This collection documents the work of Stanley Folmsbee. Included are several book manuscripts (including Folmsbee's Tennessee: A Short History and History of Tennessee), materials showing Folmsbee's involvement with such organizations as the Sons of the Revolution, a set of reprinted Civil War newspapers, and clippings of those of Folmsbee's articles that were printed in Tennessee newspapers.

Stanley L. White Collection

Overview

This collection consists of a memoir, news articles, and photographs documenting the World War II service of Stanley L. White with the 392nd Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force. The memoir is approximately 25 typed pages and details White’s experiences in the war between 1942 and 1945. The news clippings and photos are photocopies but include White’s handwritten captions and identifications.

State of Alabama Stock Certificate

Abstract

This $500 stock certificate was issued to support military defense on March 1, 1861 and matured on May 1, 1871. Nine small certificates at the bottom of the document show how much annual interest was due to the certificate's holder between 1861 and 1871.

This collection consists of Stock Certificate No. 123 issued for military defense by the State of Alabama to the Office of the Treasurer. The certificate is from after Alabama joined the Confederate States of America and is dated March 1, 1861.

State of North Carolina Land Grant Register

This register documents 89 land grants issued by the state of North Carolina between 1792 and 1794. Most of the land transferred was located in Green and Hawkins Counties, but Jefferson County and the Eastern District are also represented.

State of North Carolina Land Grant to Stockley Donelson

Abstract

This land grant documents Stockley Donelson's purchase of 640 acres of land (at the rate of 25 shillings per acre) lying south of the Nolichucky Road and north of Wallens Ridge. At the time, the land was located in North Carolina's Eastern District. A copy of the surveyor's report is also included.

Abstract This broadside presents the results of a meeting held in Nashville on July 16, 1909, for the purpose of organizing several layers of committees to enforce the new temperance and election laws in Tennessee. “Stateside: A Time Capsule from World War II” by Robert Bracken

Overview

This collection is a typewritten memoir by Robert Bracken detailing his experiences serving stateside with the Third Service Command during World War II. The memoir is 95 pages and though it was printed and completed in 1991, the text is based off of Bracken’s original manuscript written just after the war in 1946.

Steam Plant Water Quality Testing Equipment

Abstract

This collection houses a water testing kit, two glass graduated cylinders, one stirring/measuring rod, a glass melting pot with pouring spout and handle, and a glass and rubber apparatus, labeled Nitrates, with an attached glass dispensing tube. All of this equipment is labeled Steam Plant. The collection also includes an advertisement for a Spectrophotometer (used for water quality testing) and the Allen prize in Mathematics (donated by the 1927 recipient, Clara Hamlett of Kingsport).

Stephen and John Stone Papers

Stephen B. Jones Bill of Sale

Abstract

This bill of sale documents an 1846 transaction between Stephen B. Jones of Mississippi and John W. Dillahoy of Tennessee in which Jones sold Dillahoy six enslaved people for $1800.00. The people sold were Claborn and Mary, an enslaved couple with two children, Billy and Peter, and a Native American woman named Mary and her son, Daniel. They were sold on June 25th, 1846 in Lafayette County, Mississippi.

Stephen W. Gibson Letter

Stephen Ward Letter

Abstract

In this letter to his wife Nancy, Stephen Ward describes encountering Confederate cavalry on a recent scouting mission, the inclement winter weather, and foraging for food and supplies. He also complains that his recent exertions have left him "as sore as an old Government mule" and mentions that a wealthy Union sympathizer had been hung after two of his Confederate neighbors betrayed him shortly before Ward's unit arrived in the area.

Stereoview, Mining Phosphates Near Columbia, Tennessee

The collection features a stereoview of several men mining for phosphates near Columbia, Tennessee (n.d.).
