Charles B. Pittinger Letter on The Anesthetization of Fanny Longfellow for Childbirth on April 7, 1847

Abstract

This collection consists of a letter written by Dr. Charles B. Pittinger of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine affirming a statement made by the National Museum of American History that Fanny Longfellow, wife of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was the first person to receive obstetrical anesthesia in the United States from Dr. Nathan Cooley Keep. The letter is undated.

This collection contains a letter, dated June 23, 1892, by Charles Chaillé-Long, an American soldier and a member of Charles Gordon’s staff in the Egyptian Equatoria province. The letter is to British explorer and abolitionist Samuel White Baker, Gordon’s predecessor as Governor-General of Equatoria. The letter addresses Chaillé-Long’s book that has a negative outlook on General Gordon.

This collection contains a February 21, 1862, letter from Civil War soldier Charles Christensen, camped at Cairo, Illinois, to Richard Morris of Cedar Lake Wisconsin. Christensen, a member of the 8th Wisconsin, discusses his regiment, Union victories at Forts Donelson and Henry, Confederate General Lloyd Tilghman, possible rebel attacks at Cairo, the overpopulation of prisoners of war, as well as personal family matters.

Butte Collection, 1921-2003 (bulk 1940-1948), consists of diaries, memoirs, and histories of the 603rd Quartermaster Graves Registration Company (QM GR CO) that served during and after World War II. This collection extensively covers the activity of the QM GR CO, and the diaries give insight to the experiences shared by its members. The collection also includes several compact discs and a floppy disk that contain electronic copies of the printed information.

Charles Fox Letter

In a letter dated July 27, 1862, Charles Fox, a soldier from Indiana, writes to his sister from camp within three miles of Winchester, Tenn. Fox tells his sister that he is very tired of the service and would give anything to get out of it.
