Charles Watts Letter

Abstract

Charles Watts wrote this letter to his sister, Helen M. Watts, from Nashville, Tennessee on October 11, 1813. In it, he describes his journey from Lexington to Nashville (including a saltpeter cave he visited and his meeting with Lorenzo Dow), responds to news that Helen Watts sent in her last letter, and asks after his family and friends.

Abstract This collection consists of over 20,000 original cartoons drawn by Charlie Daniel during his career as the editorial cartoonist at the Knoxville Journal (from 1958) and the Knoxville News-Sentinel (from 1992). Charming Sally Cargo Manifest

Abstract

This manifest lists the cargo aboard the sloop Charming Sally on its run from Murfreesborough, North Carolina to New York City under master Alexander Mather. This cargo included pease, tobacco, tar, potatoes, and other items. The manifest was signed by Col. H. Murfree.

Charter Day Committee and Founder's Day Committee Medal Selection Records

Chester Marshall Papers

Abstract

This collection is comprised of photographs of the 73rd Bomb Wing, stationed in Saipan during World War II. The photos include images of B-29 bombers as they were sent on raids to Japan, as well as official Air Force photographs, aerial shots, and photographs of the members of the 878th Bomb Squadron. The collection also contains Chester Marshall's personal military documents including orders and memorandums. Two book jackets are also included from his published works.

Chief Nunna Hi-Diha Pathkiller Letter

Abstract

This appeal bond on behalf of Cherokee Chief Nunna Hi-Diha Pathkiller was signed by Return J Meigs III, Pathkiller’s acting attorney. The material included in the collection is an appeal bond to the Supreme Court at Knoxville. The case was a contest over the title to lands settled by the Blair Family in what is now Loudon, Tennessee. Ultimately, the courts sided with the Blair Family.

Christian Pickle Papers

Abstract These papers document a lawsuit between Christian Pickle, Benjamin White, and William Owens. The lawsuit arose from a horse race that had taken place at Ashburns Paths near Knoxville two years earlier. Both Pickle and White had horses entered in the contest, and Owens and Pickle bet $40.00 on the outcome with White and Hugh Beard acting as their respective securities. Pickle's horse emerged victorious, but neither Owens nor White paid Pickle his winnings. As a result, Pickle sued Owens and...
