Ross D. Netherton Collection

Abstract

This collection consists primarily of books from the late Helen Bullard Krechniak's library. Most of these works discuss art and Asian travel. The collection also houses two newspapers contributed by Ross Netherton: a Washington Post covering the capture of Saddam Hussein in December 2003, and a Stars and Stripes insert advertising a national World War II reunion in 2004.

Abstract

This includes a National World War II Memorial kit from 2003, with information on the National World War II Memorial dedication, and a Veterans History Project kit, undated, which features information and pamphlets on collecting and preserving stories from American war veterans. Also included is part of a letter written by Helen Bullard Krechniak in reference to an exhibition of American and Japanese dolls in Japan in 1978.

Roy Gordon Collection

Abstract

Roy Gordon's book titled Battleground (1978), an anecdotal account of the black platoon in the 47th Infantry Regiment of which Roy Gordon was a member during World War II. The collection also contains four handwritten, loose-leaf diary pages with six entries from Europe written between 1944-1945.

Ruth Anderson Reeve enlisted in the army in 1944. After bootcamp she was assigned to work as a cryptographer in the code room at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. This collection consists of a short biography - 2.5 pages - written by Ms. Reeve for her grandchildren.

Sam Balloff Oral History

Abstract

Collection consists of a 114-page bound interview from Veteran's Oral History Project conducted by the Center for the Study of War and Society, Department of History at the University of Tennessee. Balloff discusses his experieces as a young Jewish boy growing up in the South and as a soldier during World War II. During the war, he was assigned odd jobs, including grave registration and truck driving.

Samuel H. Waggoner Collection

Overview

This collection documents the World War II military service, and subsequent death, of Samuel H. Waggoner. Included is correspondence from Waggoner, particularly to his wife Anna, during his service as well as correspondence to Anna in the wake of Waggoner's death. The correspondence includes letters, greeting cards, postcard, and v-mail. Also included is memorabilia from Waggoner's service such as photographs, souvenir cards, booklets, and ephemeral items like patches, flags, and a hat.

Sinking of the Rohna by Don Fortune

Abstract

This collection consists of a self-published book, Sinking of the Rohna: America's Worst Troopship Loss in World War II, by Don Fortune. The HMT Rohna was sunk in the Mediterranean on November 26, 1943 after being hit by a secret missile aimed from a German bomber. 1,015 American soldiers died.

Stanley J. Folmsbee Letters

Abstract These five letters were written to Dr. Stanley Folmsbee between 1942 and 1945. In 1942, Ed Glass discusses the USAF, some of his predictions for the war, and his work with the Office of Price Administration. In 1944, Theron Alexander writes two letters, one thanking Folmsbee for using his thesis (written at the University of Tennessee in 1939) and one describing his life in New Guinea. Stanley L. White Collection

Overview

This collection consists of a memoir, news articles, and photographs documenting the World War II service of Stanley L. White with the 392nd Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force. The memoir is approximately 25 typed pages and details White’s experiences in the war between 1942 and 1945. The news clippings and photos are photocopies but include White’s handwritten captions and identifications.

This collection is a typewritten memoir by Robert Bracken detailing his experiences serving stateside with the Third Service Command during World War II.
